Augusta National, Along Raes Creek #16817
Signed, numbered, limited edition lithograph. Artist: Larry Dyke, Width: 45”, Height: 29”
Comments on the Hole by: Byron Nelson - 1937, '42
Although considered a birdie opportunity, we certainly didn't consider No. 13 all that short back when I was playing. Today players often hit this green with an iron on their second shot, while players in my day faced the decision after a good drive of whether to go for the green or lay up.
I had that decision in 1937. Actually, it wasn't much of a decision. Ralph Guldahl had the lead and I was trying to catch up. I had birdied No. 12 but knew that wasn't going to be enough. After a good drive on No. 13, I put it eight feet from the hole.
I made the putt for an eagle and that sent me on my way.
The stream that borders the left fairway curls in and around the right of the green, catching a wayward drive or any approach shot that's short or off-line.
I agreed with the decision a few years back to restore Rae's Creek to its original state. For a few years it was filled with water, preventing players from going down in there and taking a whack at the ball. I think that option is part of the charm of the hole, and I'm glad the Club changed it.
